Abstract

This study examines the relationship between press and ficcion in the novel O tempo e o vento, by Erico Verissimo (1905-1975). As a source of research and literary representation, newspapers, magazines and almanacks are documents that help the writer in his project of writing about some of the most important events of the History in the nineteenth and twentieth century. The historical events are narrated through direct transposition of journalistic texts, exactly the way they were originally published, or through the research in other sources, but informed by narrator as being press cuttings. This characteristic of the literary work shows a constantly attempt to keep the balance between fact and fiction, whereby the truth of the novel increases as the narrative comes about with real topics of journalism. Besides, the relationship between press and novel appears also in fictional journalists and newspapers, elements that confirm the image of the press as a power which gives the direction to some events of the history. The research aims to examine the representation of the history that is done with press cuttings, as well as the representation of the press itself, with the purpose of spreading the knowledge about the process of writer’s literary creation and about the asthetics results that come from using journalistic sources in the fiction. The research methodology is to identify the signals of the press in the novel and to compare it with the content of the news, reports and advertisements published in the media, observing the editing method and the process of incorporation of the source into the narrative. The study is divided in four main historical themes, transformed into chapters, wich are the revolutions, the politics, the literature and the immigration. The subchapters are brief introductions to the historical event and to the perception of these events by the press, followed by others which are focused on the critical study of the corpus. It can be concluded from this comparative study that the writer’s fictional project, in its historical central axis, sustains itself largely with the information collected in old editions of newspapers, magazines and almanacks, wich have the function of legitimating fiction and ensure greater likelihood. The preference of the writer for the primary source in the composition of the novel reveals a peculiar narrative technique, certainly pioneer in Brazilian literature, and is directly related to the structure and the style of the novel.
